It is done! I now have my Master’s in Creative Writing. Going into the program I knew that I wanted to do this for a few reasons, which you really need to think through before shelling out the money it takes to get a Master’s in the USA. One, my father’s passing reminded my life was too short. I had been on the fence about going back to school and it pushed me to move forward with it. My second reason was that I wanted the option to teach. One thing a professor told me as an undergrad was that a MFA wasn’t worth it unless you planned to teach. Most jobs just care about experience – and that is so true! But you have to have a Master’s to teach in the USA. Thirdly, I wanted to have time to develop as a writer. To see myself as a writer. I lacked discipline and focus. This program helped me with that. There are sooo many authors that have no higher education, more so without a Master’s, but I needed to do this. I needed to start seeing myself as a real writer and being amongst peers helped me find that. Now I have three things published and I’m working on submitting my comic to publishers within the next four months!
In the end, I don’t know what comes next, but I am proud to have taken this time for myself. I am happier than I have been in a long time.
